olive oil is a rich source of moisture for dry skin and hair. massage olive oil (luke warm) with a dash of lemon juice to ur scalp and hair and leave on for a 2-3 hours and shampoo. ur hair will feel remarkably softer, shinier and healthier.

apply olive oil mixed with a spoon of honey and a dash of lemon juice to ur skin as a face pack if u have dry skin. olive oil moisturises the skin, honey is a natural cleanser which cleanses the pores without making it dry and lemon shall bring a glow to ur face without the shine.

as far as cooking goes, olive oil is preferred b'coz it contains a higher percentage of monsaturated fats as compared to polysaturated fats and this makes it a healthier cooking option.

all the best!

Olive oil is beneficial in many ways If you have a dry scalp massage in once a week If you have head lice olive oil can be used to suffocate the lice, apply liberally to hair and leave on for 1/2 hour then wash, repeat and then comb with a lice comb to remove eggs in both cases the product is natural and wont harm the head When eating it is beneficial because it is full of "good" fats which the body uses As an ingredient is it extremely versatile as it can be used to make salad dressings, for cooking and in cakes as a butter substitute. For pets it helps to keep fur shiny and healthy

Olive Oil's benefits don't stop at heart protection and cancer risk reduction. It is also becoming a major player in the beauty industry, for treating skin and hair afflictions. Here are a few cosmetic uses of Olive Oil.

·The harsh rays of the summer sun can really take its toll on the skin. Massage a little olive oil on your face, and your skin will immediately look and feel better than ever. The acidic quality of the olive oil will shrink the pores; it also locks in the moisture without causing breakouts.

·Olive Oil can also double up as an intensive night cream for dry skins

Although more expensive than other oils, olive oil has many health benefits. It has mono-unsaturated fat and is the preferred cooking oil in Mediterranean countries.

Studies have found that consumption of olive oil can lower the risk of coronary heart disease by reducing blood cholesterol levels and blood clot formation.

Research has also found that olive oil may influence body fat distribution, with less fat stored around the stomach.

Olive oil is thought to offer a number of other health benefits, including reduced risk of some cancers (such as breast cancer), reduced risk of diabetes and, possibly, a delayed onset of complications in established diabetes.

It also contains many antioxidant phytochemicals that have many health benefits.

This oil is extracted by pressing or crushing olives and comes in different varieties, depending on the amount of processing involved. Varieties include:

~ Extra virgin: Considered the best, this oil comes from the first pressing of the olives.

~ Virgin: Comes from the second pressing.

~ Pure: Undergoes some processing, such as filtering and refining

~ Extra light: Undergoes considerable processing and only retains a very mild olive flavour.

When buying olive oil, it is best to select the extra virgin variety. In order to get maximum benefits, olive oil should be used to prepare salad dressings, as a seasoning for soups, for sautéing vegetables or for grilling.

I use this 100% Pure Olive Oil from Japan that contains absolutely no chemical substances and additives. It contains, amongst others, Vitamin A, D, E and K which the skin needs to improve the texture of our skin and hair, as well as to promote blood circulation and growth of hormones. It can also effectively protect the skin from being damaged by harmful UV rays.

Medical research has shown that the powerful anti-oxidant, “polyphenols” found in Olive Virgin Oil can protect the skin against ageing and blemishes effectively.

olive oil is beneficial in many ways -

1 ) it is warmer than other oils ( intrinsic value ) hence useful for smoothening skin and protecting it from cold weather

2 ) its contents help growth hof hair and protects scalp, stops scaling too

3 ) oils generally are divided into 2 contents like PUFA and MUFA - polyunsaturated fats and mono unsaturated fats -the less the MUFA the better the oil, for cholestrol

oilve oil falls under the category of low MUFA oils and hence olive oil is beneficial all round

Skin-

There is a low incidence of skin cancer among Mediterranean populations, and olive oil consumption could be a contributing factor to this low cancer rate. Olive oil contains significantly higher amounts of squalene than seed oils, and squalene is to a large extent transferred to the skin.

Virgin olive oil applied to the skin after sunbathing could protect against skin cancer by slowing tumor growth.

Olive oil contains significantly higher amounts of squalene than seed oils, and squalene is to a large extent transferred to the skin.

Hair-

Olive oil is a well known fact that sebum is required for proper moisturization of beautiful and healthy hair. Hair that has a good moisture basis tends to be more resistant to daily damage, tangles, dryness and split ends.

Olive oil is the oil of choice for many people suffering from a variety of hair woes. This is a excellent oil for adding moisture to the hair.

Extremely damaged hair or hair that tends to break, split or tangle will often respond very well to olive oil. Olive oil is a very healing and moisturizing oil for the hair. I have found over the years that olive oil will work for just about all types of hair.

Many scientific studies have proved that traditional cooking is basic to get a good health and, consequently its principal protagonist, olive oil. The return to Mediterranean diet consolidates it like something else than a fashion.

Some of the principal advantages of this product are:

It delays growing old because it prevens cell´s excessive production of rustings.

It contributes with E and A vitamines which the organism uses to defend itself of oxidating processes.

It is efficient to digesting apparatus; improves acidity and stomach ulcers, contributes to the assimilation of nourishment and improves the evacuation.

It favours children´s growth because it permits the asimilation of calcium, phosphorus, zinc, etc, so important on this growth.

In the United States, producers of olive oil may place the following health claim on product labels:

Limited and not conclusive scientific evidence suggests that eating about two tablespoons (23 grams) of olive oil daily may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease due to the monounsaturated fat in olive oil. To achieve this possible benefit, olive oil is to replace a similar amount of saturated fat and not increase the total number of calories you eat in a day.[6]

This decision was announced November 1, 2004 by the Food and Drug Administration after application was made to the FDA by producers. Similar labels are permitted for omega-3 fatty acids and walnuts which also contain monounsaturated oil[7].

A health study in 2005 compared the effects of different sorts of olive oil on arterial elasticity. Probands were given a serving of 60 grams of white bread and 40 milliliters of olive oil each morning for two consecutive days. The study was conducted in two stages. During the first stage, the probands received polyphenol-rich oil ("extra virgin" oil contains the highest amount of polyphenol antioxidants), during the second, they received oil with only one fifth the phenolic content. The elasticity of the arterial walls of each proband was measured using a pressure sleeve and a Doppler laser. It was discovered that after the probands had consumed olive oil high in polyphenol antioxidants, they exhibited increased arterial elasticity, while after the consumption of olive oil containing less polyphenols, they exhibited no significant change in arterial elasticity. It is supposed that, in the long term, increased elasticity of arterial walls reduces vascular stress and consequentially the risk of two common causes of death - heart attacks and stroke. This could, at least in part, explain the lower incidence of both ailments in regions where olive oil and olives are consumed on a daily basis.

In addition to the internal health benefits of olive oil, topical application is quite popular with fans of natural health remedies. Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) is the preferred grade for moisturizing the skin, especially when used in the Oil Cleansing Method (OCM). OCM is a method of cleansing and moisturizing the face with a mixture of EVOO, castor oil (or another suitable carrier oil) and a select blend of essential oils.

Olive oil is a vegetable oil obtained from the olive (Olea europaea L.), a traditional tree crop of the Mediterranean Basin. It is used in cooking, cosmetics, soaps and as a fuel for traditional oil lamps. Olive oil is regarded as a healthful dietary oil because of its high content of monounsaturated fat (mainly oleic acid) and polyphenols.

Olive oil is very healthy.

The greatest exponent of monounsaturated fat is olive oil, and it is a prime component of the Mediterranean Diet. Olive oil is a natural juice which preserves the taste, aroma, vitamins and properties of the olive fruit. Olive oil is the only vegetable oil that can be consumed as it is - freshly pressed from the fruit.

The beneficial health effects of olive oil are due to both its high content of monounsaturated fatty acids and its high content of antioxidative substances. Studies have shown that olive oil offers protection against heart disease by controlling LDL ("bad") cholesterol levels while raising HDL (the "good" cholesterol) levels. (1-3) No other naturally produced oil has as large an amount of monounsaturated as olive oil -mainly oleic acid.

Olive oil is very well tolerated by the stomach. In fact, olive oil's protective function has a beneficial effect on ulcers and gastritis. Olive oil activates the secretion of bile and pancreatic hormones much more naturally than prescribed drugs. Consequently, it lowers the incidence of gallstone formation.

Olive oil and heart disease

Studies have shown that people who consumed 25 milliliters (mL) - about 2 tablespoons - of virgin olive oil daily for 1 week showed less oxidation of LDL cholesterol and higher levels of antioxidant compounds, particularly phenols, in the blood.(4)

But while all types of olive oil are sources of monounsaturated fat, EXTRA VIRGIN olive oil, from the first pressing of the olives, contains higher levels of antioxidants, particularly vitamin E and phenols, because it is less processed.

Olive oil is clearly one of the good oils, one of the healing fats. Most people do quite well with it since it does not upset the critical omega 6 to omega 3 ratio and most of the fatty acids in olive oil are actually an omega-9 oil which is monounsaturated.

Olive oil and colon cancer

Spanish researchers suggest that including olive oil in your diet may also offer benefits in terms of colon cancer prevention (5). Their study results showed that rats fed diet supplemented with olive oil had a lower risk of colon cancer than those fed safflower oil-supplemented diets. In fact, the rats that received olive oil had colon cancer rates almost as low as those fed fish oil, which several studies have already linked to a reduction in colon cancer risk.

Types of olive oil

Generally, olive oil is extracted by pressing or crushing olives. Olive oil comes in different varieties, depending on the amount of processing involved. Varieties include:

Extra virgin - considered the best, least processed, comprising the oil from the first pressing of the olives.

Virgin - from the second pressing.

Pure - undergoes some processing, such as filtering and refining.

Extra light - undergoes considerable processing and only retains a very mild olive flavour.

When buying olive oil you will want to obtain a high quality EXTRA VIRGIN oil. The oil that comes from the first "pressing" of the olive, is extracted without using heat (a cold press) or chemicals, and has no "off" flavors is awarded "extra virgin" status. The less the olive oil is handled, the closer to its natural state, the better the oil. If the olive oil meets all the criteria, it can be designated as "extra virgin".

What is pure and light olive oil? "Pure" olive oil is made by adding a little extra virgin olive oil to refined olive oil. It is a lesser grade oil that is also labeled as just "olive oil" in the U.S.

"Light" olive oil is a marketing concept and not a classification of olive oil grades. It is completely unregulated by any certification organizations and therefore has no real precedent to what its content should be. Sometimes, the olive oil is cut with other vegetable oils.

How to care for your olive oil

Resist the temptation to place your beautiful bottle of olive oil on the windowsill. Light and heat are the #1 enemy of oil. Keep olive oil in a cool and dark place, tightly sealed. Oxygen promotes rancidity. Olive oil is like other oils and can easily go rancid when exposed to air, light or high temperatures.

You can of course buy extra virgin olive oil in any grocery store. A good source on the internet for extra virgin olive oil is here.

Olive oil versus canola oil

Do not fall into the hype which is put out by traditional medicine regarding the promotion of canola oil (rapeseed) as superior due to its concentration of monounsaturated fatty acids. Olive oil is far superior and has been around for thousands of years. Canola oil is a relatively recent development and the original crops were unfit for human consumption due to their high content of a dangerous fatty acid called euric acid.

If the taste of olive oil is a problem, or if you are frying or sautéing food, then you should consider coconut oil. Many nutritionally misinformed people would consider this unwise due to coconut oil's nearly exclusive content of saturated fat. However, this is just not the case. Because it has mostly saturated fat, it is much less dangerous to heat. The heat will not tend to cause the oil to transition into dangerous trans fatty acids.
