Warning! :: When working with these cleaning products, it's a very good idea to wear gloves, and not to breath-in the chemicals. Make sure when washing clothes in the sink that nothing splashes on nearby dishes or food to reduce the possible of food poisoning. You can also some sort of facial mask or protection, which isn't required, but is a good idea to consider--especially if you have trouble handling the smell of chemicals or toxins.

Alright. First thing is to get some supplies from the store. Most of these can be found at dept. stores like Wal-Mart, Cosco, or Sams Club. You'll need: Oxyclean (just oxygen cleaner), and wipe-on spot remover. All three of these can be found in the laundry section usually. If you can't find it ask an attendant. Bring everything home or anywhere you have a sink avaible with hot water. Wipe on the spot removing cleaner, apply alot and really scrub it in deep. Next put it through the washer with a scoop or two of oxyclean(do NOT apply bleach directly to the surface, add it to the load instead, and careful not to add too much or put in anything but light colors to avoid ruining clothes.). Set the wash settings to as hot as you can, and start the load.

Now you should see that the marker stain has faded out, next bring it back to the sink and put some wipe-on stain remover, oxyclean, and thick soap or laundry deturgent. Take a brush(sponge won't work so well) and scrub it under a light stream of very hot water until it you begin to see the marker stain fade more. When the soap begins to turn bluish from the marker, you know you're making progress. Continue these steps until you've gotten out that pesky stain. To avoid spending too much cash, try to do alot more scrubbing under hot water in the sink than washing in the washers. This should take out the marker ink. If it does not, then I'm afraid little else will work.

PS: If the same problem applies with a white shirt, then use bleach too, just don't over use it.

Soak cooked rice in water then use the rice to rub on the stains. after some time, you'll begin to see the stains wear out. Then wash it off with clean water or detergent.

I haven't had luck with permanent marker stains in the past but now I have been turned on to using "Simple Green" on stains and it lifts out a lot of old set in stains. It wouildn't hurt to try.

The spray and wash that has 2 seperate sides of fluid (Spray n Wash Dual Power) takes just about anything out. Let it sit for about 20 minutes then wash and repeat. It takes out blueberry stains , marker, paint, icecream, tomato etc.. Sometimes the stain is gone before I even launder it! I swear by it. My kids get all sorts of stuff on their clothes and everyone wonders how their clothes look so good when I pass them along as hand me downs. Thats my secret.

It isnt bleach either so wont ruin the shirt.

Do it quick though, dont let it sit.

Good Luck!

Try these techniques :

First, whenever you get a stain of any sort, it is important to treat it as soon as possible. If you can’t, then at least try to keep the garment wet (or re-wet it occasionally) in order to delay the offending stain from setting. Also, never put anything in a hot dryer until you’re sure the stain has been eradicated. This is a sure way to permanently set the stain.

For magic marker stains try the following remedies. Always blot, not rub, any stain and have a clean, white absorbent cloth to put under the garment. Also, lay the stain side (usually the outside) against the cloth. Apply the stain remover (to the back side of the stain), let stand for a couple of minutes and then blot the area trying to push the (hopefully) now soluble stain into the under-cloth. Rinse with warm water and repeat if needed or recommended. Remember, if in doubt, always test the fabric for color fastness on an inconspicuous area.

Try these stain removers in this order: Rubbing alcohol, Mild detergent, Plain water, Dry cleaning fluid ( repeat only twice). Also, hairspray has often been recommended by many as the best substance for removing all types of ink. Finally, if the garment is white you can try to bleach it out.
2006-06-06 02:16:09 UTC
Make sure you have a pad of paper towels underneath the area of material that you are trying to get the stain out of. Lay the item face down and work from the back of the stain, to avoid pushing the marker contents further into the fibers.

and always air dry the garment after laundering, in the event the stain is not gone, and needs to be treated again. The heat from a dryer can set the stain so deeply that removal may not be possible.

You can try sponging with rubbing alcohol and then laundering, or if the stain is in a viable location, soak the area (cuff, shirt sleeve, etc.) in a cup or dish of milk for several hours, then launder.

, you may be able to remove most of it by using hairspray or rubbing alcohol. Put a small amount on a cloth and dab the spot The ink will come off on the wet cloth, at which time you should blot with a clean piece of dry cloth. Repeat this process of wet blot, dry blot, until you have gotten all the ink you can. Rinse the spot with clean water

Permanent markers are just that – permanent - so they may not be able to be removed completely. You can lighten the stain significantly though, and may be able to lighten it enough that it will be hardly noticeable.

One of the first methods that you can try involves using the rubbing alcohol or a non-oily hairspray. Moisten the stain lightly with the alcohol or hairspray. Place white paper towels beneath the stained area . Place the article face down, and start working from the back of the fabric, behind the stain, which will help to put the stain out and not force the permanent marker ink stain further into your stained clothing. Whatever stain removal method you select, there are two basic rules: test it first on an area that will not show, to verify that the solution will actually help and ensure it will not stain or damage the fabric/color, and the other rule is to air dry the clothing after you have laundered and remove the stain, because if the stain is not completely gone, and needs to be treated again the heat from the clothes dryer will set the stain and make it almost impossible to remove.

Some of the stain treatments methods used for ballpoint ink stains might also to help remove it

You're in luck! I used to work in a lab where we wrote on the petri dishes with Sharpie marker, and we would remove the marker with ethanol.

Where can I get some ethanol, you ask? It's in many household products, but you can by some relatively pure ethanol at the liquor store in the form of "Everclear". (Don't drink it, though!) I believe that the denatured alcohol mentioned by the previous answerer is basically the same product. I have used ethanol to remove permanent marker from a t-shirt before, so I know it works. Hair spray also works because it, too, contains ethanol. Beware that the ethanol will dissolve the ink, which might make it spread into a bigger spot than before, but if you keep working with it it should dissolve it away completely after a while.

The dry cleaners would do a fine job, though, seriously.

I found that Non Acetone professional nail polish remover worked even faster than the hand sanitizer. It's ingredients include ethyl, methyl, and isopropyl alcohol. I had gotten a dark purple Sharpie stain on a shirt that was not white - so I could not use bleach. I just kept blotting the fabric, using a new piece of paper towel every now and then to absorb the stain coming through.

shout makes wipes, and there's also tide&clorox bleach pens, others, i'm sure.. try those, or, maybe that 2 part one that activates when the air hits, or the 2 mix together, i forget what the name... try in an inconspicuous(sp?) spot.. and try the pens& smaller applications first, as to prevent bleeding onto the rest of the garment. *REMRMBER* water fades clothes, dryer shrinks and SETS STAINS(heat), so start off using tepid water, and whatever you do, BLOT, DONT RUB! RUBBING WORKS IT INTO THE FIBERS WORSE.. shout, spray n' wash and all them have some % of chlorine bleach, which weaken fibers and can damage clothes quickly if care is not taken, so don't let your shirt just hang out all willy- nilly.. and always have a sink full of cool, clear water, for emergency and rinsing between working. give the shirt a chance to rest, relax, and regroup before you pile more chemicals on the stain, or you could end up with a worse problem than you started out with... patience is the key to success..and a careful eye to tell if the problem is getting better or worse..

One of my managers at work just a black sharpie do the same thing to a blue cotton shirt, I was shocked when I saw him in the same one 2 weeks later.

Here is what he did...

...He put hand sanitizer on the stain right after it happened (you can also use rubbing alcohol or hairspray.... hand santitiser was all he had handy)

..then he took the shirt home and rubbed in some laundery soap and then let it soak in oxy clean for a few days.

..when he washed it, the stain was gone.

There are several options I know of. #1 you could take it to a professional cleaner and see what they can do. #2 try using the clorox pen. Clorox has come along way with fabric and colors these day are pretty resilient. #3 There is a company(I think it is Austins?) that creates little bottles of different type of stain removers for different types of stains one is for grass and one is for blood and one is for ink. #4 There is a guy by the name of Haley he has a Haleys Hints program and I have seen him remove this very thing with natural chemical found in the home I just cannot remember what he used for the ballpoint pen and the marker. I want to say it was hairspray. Good Luck!

what ever you try of the above , its not gonna work . it would be better if you do some thing innovative as might be you could scratch your shirt by some thing really rough & make it rugged , its cool nowadays , or may be just cut it nicely with a blade & the get it stiched from the corners so that it does not tear further , may be you could make a design or write your name or a good punch line on your shirt, or pehraps you could put one of those tags available in market & stich it over your shirt.or paste or stich , some thing like a superman logo , which also might work as the movie is almost realeasing soon. well get your mins to work & do what ever you want , but the stain is not going anywhere.

I'm not sure this will work, but it got lipstick out of a shirt for me. Wash it (by hand rubbing) with a Irish Spring soap--the bar. Just rub the cake of soap on the marker spot and keep scrubbing the shirt. Then rinse it. If it looks like it's going away, keep doing it until the stain is gone.

Spray hairspray on the dry shirt where the ink has stained. Use REAL hairspray like white rain or final net or aquanet. Blot at the stain with a clean rag. Get as much out as possible before you wash. Don't dry in the clothes dryer until you remove the stain.

There is a slimy goop (several different brands) that automotive repair shops keep handy to clean their hands. Take some of that and work it into the fabric, let it set for awhile, then hand-rinse it in water as hot as you can put your hands in. Then follow it up with regular soap (dish detergent works) to get the residue of the hand goop out. It worked pretty well on a cotton dress, so 90/10 shouldn't be all that different.

Good luck!

It depends on what the stain is and how long ago it happened. Ideally you will have taken your shirt off straight away and put it in to soak. Salt and a drop of water applied to some stains works, as the wet salt soaks up the stain. THis is especially effective if you spill wine and treat it immediately. Vinegar removes some stains bit I haven't seen that in action yet. Good luck.

If it has already been washed and dried before the stain was noticed, you may have to take it to a dry cleaner. If you can treat the stain with alcohol before it has gone through the dryer you might get it out. Or maybe nail polish remover. DO NOT mix chemicals.

You should be able to take it to your local dry cleaner. If you tell them exactly what is on the shirt, most of the time they can get it out. I used to work at a dry cleaners and the biggest mistake people make when they "stain" their clothes, is that they put water on it, or baking soda or vinager....DO NOT DO THAT...sometimes that can set the stain. If you get a stain of any kind on your clothes do not do anything (wipe it a little if you need to) or put anything on it. Take it to your dry cleaner and tell them exactly what it is and they should be able to "spot clean" the garment. They have different chemicals for different stains. It shouldn't cost very much either....I live in Texas and if it's more than $5...it's too much. Good luck.

Spray the marker stain with hairspray and then scrub. May need to repeat it.

Try leaving a cottton ball soaked with rubbing alcohol on the shirt, when the ball is dry pick it up, it should have absorbed most or all of the stain.

Permanent marker? If the shirt wasn't gray I would say try using hairspray. But that might leave a grease stain, unless you follow it with shout spray and wash, and then immediately wash it. But never dry it, until you are sure the stain is out!

HAIRSPRAY! I am terrible about getting pen and marker stains on my clothes and hairspray has been the only thing to ever work for me. Just spray it on the stain, blot, and repeat. You should see the actual color coming off onto whatever you are blotting with as the hairspray breaks up the stain. Just keep doing this until the stain is pretty faint and then wash with detergent and then hang it out a rack to dry. Good luck!

i know these sound crazy, and i know u said u prefer not to dry ur shirt, but here are two tips that really do work!

soak milk over the stain, let it set for half an hour, then rub the shirt with a toothbrush.

put baby or body powder over the stain and iron it. This will absorb the ink stains.

i have tried both techniques, and they both work really well, but i have never used them on a permanent marker.

good luck!

DO NOT USE THE CLOROX PEN IF IT IS A COLOR SHIRT. I it will bleach it out the color out and not the marker. Tide to go might work. If not try hairspray (aerosol can) and plain old bath soap. I got set in pen ink out with at formula.

Spray and wash might work even shout. Also try oxy clean, even soaking it. But i am afraid that you will have perament marker on your shirt til you through the shirt away...

Try Jik Colours, a bleach for Coloured clothes.

If all else fails, take the marker and the shirt to the dry cleaners and they will try dry cleaning it. If u supply the source of the colour stain, it usually has a better chance, cos they can know what they are dealing with.

There are a few things you might try, but I can't guarantee they'll work 100%. You know that clear hand sanitizer that water isn't needed? Try that, it removes that particular type of ink. Also, you can try simple green. The last suggestion I'll give you is: Acetate or toluene. Be careful with that. Do it in well ventilated area, and hope it doesn't shrink the polyester. Good luck P.S. if you ruin your favorite shirt by one of my solutions, please forget you ever heard of me.

My aunt Virginia has an, almost, no fail method but i don't think we've ever needed to use it on laundry marker damage. Try this: Pre-treat with some sort of stain remover a couple of different times & then go to town on it with a bar of Lava soap. Of course, laundry markers being what they are, were designed to not come out of material in the wash. This is so we don't have to sew name tags in our underwear for camp.

soak in tepid water (not hot and not cold) with oxyclean-use more than it says. you can towel dry it then hang to dry. Then get the dryell cleaning starter kit- it has spot remover with pads to put under the stain while you rub the spot-cleaner on the stain. i used this on a silk jacket and it got a stain out. then, wash the shirt with tide. make sure the stain is out before putting it in the dryer or the heat from the dryer will set the stain for good. good luck

I agree with Anna V and Stephanie S, it will not happen, it is called "permanent marker" for a reason. Buy a new shirt!!!!!

Or the alternative: Leave the mark in and try to start a new fashion trend.

put tide w/bleach directly on the stain and let it soak for an hour or two. Turn your washing machine to the lowest water level with warm water, and put a cup of bleach in it with your blouse. Let it soak for an hour and turn your machine to wash, the stain should be gone, I know it works for getting out regular magic markers. If the stain doesn't come out, you can try finger nail polish remover.

Believe it or not, I did this and it works. Use MILK. You need to rub it with milk, and then wash it. then repeat. It takes a few times, but it comes out. I am not sure why. I had a shirt witha huge word written acorss the back, and the milk took care of it. Since milk works, if you want to be creative, perhaps the oil based things people suggest may work, or butter.

get a gray erase-able marker and rub over the blue permanent sharpie mark. repeat as required...being careful not to scuff up the cotton fiber. take your time and don't scrub too hard, try dabbing and blotting...then any excess gray should wash off.

it's saved me twice!!!! learned by accident when someone left a sharpie by the grease board and grabbed it by mistake...now i always check!

Tide to Go pen works on many stains but a permanent marker stain is designed to be permanent. You could put a decorative embellishment over it like a sequined butterfly patch.

Go to Wal-Mart or an auto parts store and get a can of BlueMagic. It works on just about everything. I have seven kids and I can't imagine life without it. It usually costs around $6 a can, but I have gotten it for less on sale at Advanced Auto.

It takes out blood, marker, tar, grease, you name it! I have used it on carpet, clothes, and canvas sneakers with excellent results.

For any stain suck as permanent marker or hair dye spary hair spray on it before you wash it as this will keep the mark on the surface so when you wash it, it should wash straight out. (it may take a couple of washers)

Or

Place the shirt in the sun for a few hours as this will bleach the mark so it fades out. (It will take sometime though)

You should always have "L.O.C." ready for a challenge like yours. It was the very first product introduced by the legendary Amway Corp. back in 1959, it is still one of their most popular cleaning products. Liquid Organic Concentrate is what it stands for and it will do the job you require.

They have changed their name over the years, it is now called Access Business Group International LLC, Ada, Michigan 49355 and you will find local dealers just by asking around.

Personally, I believe L.O.C. is their best product, but they have thousands of others available. Go for it. You'll see!

I haven't read the other replies...but try a "non oily hairspray" blot the area REPEATEDLY...with cloth or paper towels see if the ink transfers to this paper or cloth.. then rinse in cold water.....also...if you cannot remove the stain buy some fabric paint and make some "art" over the stained area....then it won't be a complete loss! Good luck!

Try using palmolive dish soap directly on the stain and leave on over night in a bit of water then scrub it in the morning toss it in the washer works great on drease stains maybe work on marker?

I do not think it will come out but you may want to paint over it, dye it or decal over it...my daughter put a slash of red paint on a sweatshirt that had a stain and it looks great and other girls copied her...be a trend setter and not so uptight...it is cheeper to be origional. Madonna was made popular by wearing clothes from Goodwill. So did Cindy Lauper. know her?

You can get pocket sized Stain Devils are they have several that are aimed at one specific type of stain.

There only small so they won't cost a lot.

If that fails, could you put a badge or sew a patch over the stain?

Good luck.

Since its permanent marker you have to use something with a solvent in it. I would try lighter fluid first then the tide to go pen after I had washed it but not dried.

Try Tide to Go, Oxi Clean, and if all else fails get a big GRAY sharpie to color over the blue!

this has happened to me before, and washing the shirt several times with Zout works well. Also, a tide pen may work, but it's not guaranteed. It kind of depends on the color of the shirt.

The day you find a solution to wash the stain out, the marker company shall not be able to label it 'PERMANENT'

Did you say it is a permanent marker?

Try goof off. It runs about 3 bucks a bottle. Or, pre- treat your shirt with lye soap, but be careful to only leave it on for about 2 minutes before washing. I use lye ( or "Grandma's") soap on all my stains ( you can buy it at the grocery store).

I set up for concerts & conventions & am always getting sharpie on my clothes. I had been told to use ALOT of different things. I find that GOOF-OFF (yellow can w/ red letters, & you can get it from wal-mart) works very well. I've found that OXYCLEAN & WD-40 work well also!! Let me know how it comes out. Good Luck!!

Go to any grocery store(except WalMart) and get this stuff in a small yellow bottle. They sell it with the laundry stuff. There is a bottle for every kind of stain.Get the one that is for marker/ink stains. IT WORKS!TRUST ME!It has happened to me before and this stuff is a God sent!

Permanent markers are just that – permanent - so they may not be able to be removed completely. You can lighten the stain significantly though, and may be able to lighten it enough that it will be hardly noticeable.
2014-06-11 20:50:02 UTC
clear water, for emergency and rinsing between working. give the shirt a chance to rest, relax, and regroup before you pile more chemicals on the stain, or you could end up with a worse problem than you started out with... patience is the key to success..and a careful eye to tell if the problem is getting better or worse..

It is called PERMANENT marker for a reason. I think you should either use your creativity to hide the marker (like adding more marker or a patch), use it as pajamas or use it as a smock.

Good Luck! It's happened to my daughter about 2 times. I just had to trash it.

If it is a white shirt then try bleach.

Do not place in the dryer until your sure that the stain is out.

Once its in the dryer, its set for life.

Rewash before drying if the staiin is not completely out.

omg it got pink paint out of my lime green t-shirt..... and redwood stain out of my jeans. the sharpie will come out. they have it at walmart. :)

or, just buy some grey dye and dye the whole shirt again.....

if worst comes to worst, grab some colored scaps of fabric and make patches over it, and a couple other places.... or cover it up with a desighn from another loved tshirt thats completely worn out..... make a fashion statment. :)

do a google search for "didi seven" it is a non chlorine bleach that works for colors and gets any stain out... you have to mail order it for about $10 but it is VERY worth it!! i used it for getting india ink out of beige carpet... the stain was HUGE! but after didi seven, it was gone!

just make sure to use the hottest water available with it and rinse well after you clean the spot.

keep it on hand afterwards for those hard to clean monthly accidents too;)

Try spraying the crap out of it with hairspray (something cheap, like Aquanet, will work best). When I was younger, I wrote all over my jeans with a marker (I believe it was permanent). When I got home, I sprayed them with hairspray, stuck them in the washer and they came out like new!

TRY SPRAYING IT WITH HAIRSPRAY, AND RUB GENTLY, IT WILL KINDA HAVE A MELTED LOOK JUST KEEP SCRUBBING , RINSE WITH COOL WATER, AND JUST KEEP SPRAYING WITH HAIR SPRAY. THEN USE TIDE TO GO ON IT, AND THEN WASH IT IN THE WASHER WITH TIDE. AS WASHING GO, IF NOT TOTALLY GONE IT WILL FADE EVENTUALLY. OTHERWISE USE OTHER SHARPIE COLORS AND DO SOME SCRIBBLES ON THE SHIRT TO MAKE IT LOOK UNIQUE.. GOOD LUCK.!

I cannot eat a hot dog that has been microwaved. You can cook it over a fire or on the grill. The length of time you grill, boil, microwave, or cook over a fire will change the taste.
